BAHKAP Initiatives: Partnership & Linkages

PRESENTATION OF BAHKAP SYSTEM FRAMEWORK                 Mr. Rosendo Bonghanoy, Jr., Municipal Solid Waste Manager presented the BAHKAP System Pilot Project 2022 result and salient points in the pipeline for 2023.   The BAHKAP System Framework is the major output developed based on the results and analyses in the pilot study.                   In the study conducted in June to December of 2022, there were three indicators used.   First, the Level of Acceptability of Household toward proper waste segregation, second, the Level of Participation of Household in proper waste segregation, and third, the waste characterization guide for the households introducing the nine (9) types of garbage.   The introduction of waste characterization guide to all households and puroks have gained positive feedback from the people because it made easier for them to segregate their own garbage.                   Based on the BAHKAP System monitoring, the average participation of households in pilot bara

INSIGHTS: Coastal Resource Management

Increasing demand for marine products in the local market is directly associated with the increasing human population of the country. The increase in population per year has greatly impacted the socio-economic landscape and values of the people.  To mention some challenges associated with population is its effect on coastal resource management.  Destructive fishing activities is one of the perennial issues affecting coastal resource management in the Philippines. The enforcement of the national and local policies and regulations is very challenging because most of the time the effort will all trickle down to inconsistency in the implementation and lesser priority. In the northern part of Bohol, Philippines, the settlements are most commonly concentrated along coastal areas and islets thereby increasing the demand for marine products and at the same time potential increase in the enforcement threshold.   The first issue is the high demand of marine products in the local market.   Why?

Series of Clean-up Drives help introduce the nine types of garbage to households!

This activity aims to introduce the nine types of garbage commonly found in the mainstream for the proper segregation, recovery, treatment and final disposal.  This activity is part of the series of purok-based initiated activities to increase the level of participation of households in waste segregation.  The target for this year is to reach 60% level of participation of households from the 40% participation in 2022.  The target will include all households in the 25 barangays of the Municipality of Bantayan.

Domestic waste dropped by 23% in April, the Municipal Solid Waste Management of Bantayan reported from the increase posted in Q1.

For the month of April, we expected the volume of garbage to double because of the holy week activities.  The possible influx of local tourists and devotees coming from other cities and municipalities and even from other provinces were expected to affect waste generation.  However, the data show decrease of waste received in April 1-30.  From the average of 99,000 kg in Quarter 1, we only recorded 77,002 kg in in April (see Figure 1).  Based on data and assuming that all garbage generated in April has been collected, there is no significant increase of garbage generated in the month of April.  Though there is a slight increase of more than 2000 kg of biodegradable collected from the Public Market still manageable as compared to the forecasted increase of 100,000 kg.  Factors affecting the weight of domesrtic waste: 1. The moisture content of garbage in April 1-30 was relatively lower due to absence of rainfall.  The average moisture content of Municipal Solid Waste ranging from 15%
